According to N Lakshmi, Senior Dietician, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad, passion fruit, known as ‘Krishna phal’ in India, originates from the Passiflora vine and finds its native roots in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Despite being a tropical fruit, certain varieties can thrive in sub-tropical climates.
This adaptability has led to its cultivation in an increasing number of countries, with passion fruit now flourishing in regions across Asia, Europe, and North America.

Lakshmi elaborated on the following health benefits of passion fruits.
- Rich in antioxidants: It is a potent source of antioxidants such as vitamin C, beta-carotene, and polyphenols, offering protection against free radical damage.
- Source of fibre: Its high fibre content supports digestion and aids in preventing constipation
- Boosts immunity: Passion fruit’s Vitamin C content bolsters the immune system, fortifying the body’s defences against infections.
- Promotes heart health: Its low sodium and high potassium levels contribute to heart health by helping regulate blood pressure and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Improved sleep quality: compounds like serotonin and tryptophan within the fruit promote relaxation and potentially lead to improved sleep quality.
Some studies even suggest that passion fruit’s antioxidants may possess anti-cancer properties, said Lakshmi.
Can diabetics consume passion fruits?
Passion fruits have a moderate glycemic index (GI), meaning they can cause a gradual increase in blood sugar levels, according to Lakshmi. “However, they are relatively low in net carbohydrates due to their high fibre content,” she added.
